The Foundation for the Mount Kisco Public Library is hosting a wine tasting event on May 21st to raise monies for the library’s Children’s Room.

This is an opportunity to sample extraordinary wines and mingle with others who hold supporting our library dear to their hearts.

This is our first fundraiser of the year. The Library through the Foundation needs your support!

Monday morning, September 9th, 2013 participants in the Access Day Program of Ability Beyond Disability (located at 120 Kisco Avenue, Mount Kisco); members of the Hopp Ground Garden Club; representatives from the Mount Kisco Library Foundation; Jim Palmer, the village manager and others assembled on the village lawn to celebrate the first anniversary of the Ability Gardens and to recognize the accomplishments of the Ability Gardeners, who planted the seeds, transplanted the seedlings, planted them and watered them. Mayor Michael Cindrich awarded each Ability Gardener with a Certificate of Appreciation.

Mayor Michael Cindrich, Mayor of Mount Kisco, will award Certificates of Appreciation to those Ability Gardeners whose efforts have contributed to the beauty and enjoyment of the Mount Kisco Greenspace. In case of rain, ceremony will be held in the Town Hall.

 

Dedication of The New Ability Gardens

The dedication of The New Ability Gardens project took place on Sunday, Sept 9th, 2013 at  1:00 PM at the newly planted raised gardens on the lawn of Mount Kisco Public Library/ Village Hall in conjunction with Mount Kisco Sales Days and the First Annual Art Show.  The dedication was be held at the entrance to the Mount Kisco Green Space next to the Blackeby parking lot.

The Dedication was sponsored by the Mount Kisco Public Library Foundation.

The Ability Gardens are the result of a collaborative effort by Mount Kisco Public Library Foundation, the Hopp Ground Garden Club, Ability Beyond Disability and the Village of Mount Kisco.

Ability Beyond Disability is a nonprofit organization that provides services for adults with special needs located in New York and Connecticut.

Among those present at the Dedication were Mayor Michael Cindrich; Anthony Monteleone, Chairman of the Mount Kisco Public Library Foundation; and members of The Ability Beyond Disablity group: Mary Pell Bidwell; Shaileen Brighton-Ortiz; Liz Summers; and Barry Dain.

The dedication of the new Ability Garden project will take place on Sunday, Sept 9th at  1:00 PM at the newly planted raised gardens on the lawn of Mount Kisco Public Library/ Village Hall in conjunction with Mount Kisco Sales Days and the First Annual Art Show.  The dedication will be held at the entrance to the Mount Kisco Green Space next to the Blackeby parking lot. It can also be accessed from  Shoppers Park parking lot.  It will be located across the bridge from Shoppers Park and right at the first crosswalk.

The Ability Gardens are the result of a collaborative effort by Mount Kisco Public Library Foundation, the Hopp Ground Garden Club, Ability for Disability and the Village of Mount Kisco.

Ability Beyond Disability is a nonprofit organization that provides services for adults with special needs located in New York and Connecticut.

These gardens will be planted and tended as part of an ongoing garden therapy program developed by the Hopp Ground Garden Club to serve adults who love to garden but need assistance. Accessibility is very much an issue for this group and these Ability Gardens will give the Ability Gardeners a chance to give back to the community; a basic ingredient of a fulfilling adult life.

The Foundation for the Mount Kisco Public Library continues its "Buy a Brick" campaign to raise money to furnish the interior of the library and to enhance and expand programs and services offered by the library to the community.

This is a unique opportunity for the community to show their support of our library by purchasing a personalized, engraved brick.

Not only will you be able to help us "Raise the Roof on Literacy" in Mount Kisco, but you can leave a permanent family legacy in our community.

Other News: The Rice Foundation, a Westchester Charitable foundation, has given the Library Foundation a $ 5,000.00 Grant to equip the Library with additional computers. Our heartfelt Thanks to The Rice Foundation which continues to be one of our major annual supporters.

 

The butterfly garden that enhances the library building and the surrounding area was built in 2004 and redesigned and rebuilt in 2010 using donations and the help of the Mt. Kisco Rotary, A & J Home Care and Bedford Audubon and the Mount Kisco Library Foundation. The Butterfly Garden gives much pleasure to our community and inspires a love of nature. The leaves of specific plants provide food for caterpillars raised each summer in the Library's Children's Room and the hatched butterflies feed on the nectar from the flowers in the garden. The butterflies are tagged and can be followed on their way to Mexico.

The Mount Kisco Library Foundation is seeking volunteers to maintain the beauty of this wonderful garden. A Quilt Display to Celebrate
American Girl Month

In the month of February, The Mount Kisco Public Library celebrated the American Girl and the genius of Valerie Tripp. All events were held in the Community Room in the Mount Kisco Public Library.

The afternoon program started off with the Step Up Dance Company which performed a medley of dances incorporating the theme of some of the American Girl Dolls.

Quilters from the surrounding communities were invited to display their quilts as part of the celebration of the American Girl Month. The quilts represent a timeline of history portrayed by the needlework of American Women.

First Ladies' Log Cabin

The American Girl Quilt Display opened Friday, February 3, 2012 and continued throughout the month of February. This exhibit featured quilts representing the historical time periods of the American Girl Dolls. Examples included Baltimore Album, Dear Jane, Log Cabin, Sunbonnet Sue, Depression quilts and Victorian Crazy Quilts. Also, Diana Sharkey's First Ladies' Quilt was displayed. Incorporated in this prizewinning quilt were handwritten statements dedicated to each of the First Ladies of the Nation. The quilters who were displaying are all well known and established artists.

American Girl Day Highlights

Valerie Tripp, author of over 30 American Girl books, spoke to children and their families about the joys of writing and how she came to be a writer. She attended Mount Kisco Elementary School as a child. As she writes in her biography, her stories have been in large part animated by her childhood experiences in and around Mount Kisco. Valerie is known for engaging children's imagination while introducing them to the writing process. She described where the ideas for her stories came from, and about the creative process, research, and the joys of writing. She concluded by answering questions leaving time for a book signing and photos.
